Studies on food allergies are constantly coming out with new information to help the community. Here are some interesting facts to share with your friends and family.
*Only eight foods account for almost 90 percent of ALL food allergy reactions! They are: Peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish
*1 in 13 children in America have a food allergy, so your child is far from alone!
*Food allergies develop when the body’s immune system thinks a food protein is dangerous and attacks it.
*Peanuts and soy aren’t the only foods you can be allergic to, some people are allergic to corn, seeds, and even meat.
*Anaphylaxis is a very severe allergic reaction. A person can have trouble breathing, have stomach pains, and appear pale and weak.
*People with severe food allergies typically carry “epipens.” These contain the medication epinephrine and are given to stop anaphylaxis symptoms.
*You should always go to the emergency room, even if you’ve injected epinephrine during anaphylaxis.
*You can’t judge how severe an allergic reaction will be based on a previous reaction. Each one is different.
* It can take up to a few days for a reaction to a food to occur.
* Since over 15 million people in America have food allergies there are plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, and food companies that cater to food allergy community.
